Parking and car traffic in Flemington Hill

Moonee Valley City Council is developing parking and traffic strategies for Flemington Hill and the Flemington Racecourse area.  In February and March 2012, questionnaires  were sent  to residents in Flemington Hill and surrounding the Racecourse.

Information regarding traffic counts in Flemington Hill are available on Council’s website. The full Traffix Group report is available here.

Council has formed working parties to discuss the specific concerns of Flemington Hill East (east of Wellington St) and Flemington Hill West (west of Wellington St).  The working parties have met to discuss the issues and possible solutions.

Issues discussed by the Flemington Hill East working group included:

  • Removing roundabouts to make it safer for cyclists in one way streets
  • Creating good connections with other people from other streets in the area
  • Possible truck ban
  • The Traffix plan and whether it should proceed or be changed substantially

The Flemington Hill East Working Group met on Monday, 17 September 2012, where the results of a traffic survey were presented, as well as a proposed traffic management plan.  The traffic management plan proposes several partial closures of streets to reduce rat-running, as well as right-hand turn bans in the AM and PM peak.  It is proposed that the street closures would not affect cyclists, who would still be able to travel in both directions down all streets.

Following the feedback given at the meeting, two more proposals have been developed and circulated to the working group for comment.

It is anticipated that the Working Group will meet in late October and the traffic management plan will be released for public consultation in November 2012.  Issues still to be resolved include parking and landscaping along streets.
